Spiritual Cleansing: What It Is, And How to Create Your Ritual

For many of us, the stresses of daily life can leave us feeling depleted, anxious, and out of touch with our spirituality. Balancing job and family responsibilities, staying “plugged in” to technology, and not having enough quiet time to recharge can lead to negative thoughts, exhaustion, and energy blockages that prevent us from moving forward in our lives. We can begin to feel “stuck” and even numb to the things that normally bring us joy.

If this sounds familiar, it may be time to incorporate a spiritual cleansing ritual into your life.

What is spiritual cleansing?

Spiritual cleansing is the practice of clearing away the negative energy of the past to encourage the flow of positive energy, remove energetic and spiritual blockages, and deepen our connection to the Divine. By performing this cleansing, we elevate our mind, body, and spirit and become more grounded and balanced, more open to receiving blessings, and more receptive to positive energy. Clearing away the negative and making room for the positive can help us become “unstuck” and help restore our connection to the spiritual, or the Divine.

How do I perform a spiritual cleansing?

There are numerous ways to elevate the mind, body, and spirit through spiritual cleansing. Experimenting and finding the ways that work for you is part of the joy of a spiritual cleanse.

Rituals for spiritual cleansing:

Meditation with a mala

Meditation is a powerful and meaningful way to perform a spiritual cleanse, and meditating with a mala can help you manifest positivity into your life while letting go of negative energy. Set your intention for what you want to draw toward you, then find a mantra to support this intention. As you meditate, move your fingers around the beads of the mala and repeat your mantra in time with your breath. You’ll say your mantra for each bead on the mala: 108 times. Once you have worked your way around the entire mala, your meditation practice is complete—and you’ll have shifted the stagnant negative energy out of your mind, body, and spirit.

Smudging with palo santo or sage

Burning a bundle of sage or a palo santo stick has long been a tradition of the Indigenous Peoples of North and South America to help clear away negativity and purify our environment of unwanted energies. It is believed that the smoke helps to clear the air and our own negativity that we may bring into our space.

Healing gemstones and crystals

Healing gemstones and crystals are believed to carry with them specific energies that benefit their wearer. As part of a spiritual cleansing ritual, wearing gemstone jewelry or carrying crystals can help release negative energy and harness the positive energies associated with the stones themselves.

Being present in nature

Much of our day-to-day life is spent indoors, under artificial lighting. Getting outside to reconnect with nature is a relatively easy and affordable way to conduct a spiritual cleanse. Even those who live in a city can get outside for a walk in the sun, feel the breeze on their skin, tune into the sounds of birds, or meander through a park. If you live somewhere where you can be barefoot in the grass, on the dirt, or in the sand, do so: Connecting with nature has restorative benefits, and can do wonders for letting go of negativity.

Enjoying a spiritual cleanse can be as simple or as involved as you want it to be. The most important thing is to remember that you have these tools available to you to reset and begin anew. Each time we perform a spiritual cleanse, we are letting go of what no longer serves us to make room for positivity. We are actively choosing to be “unstuck,” to move forward, and to embrace a new beginning for our mind, body, and spirit.
